The Arctic: A New Geopolitical Front?

The Arctic is changing rapidly, with far-reaching consequences for geopolitics, security, resources and global trade. As the ice recedes, new economic and strategic opportunities are emerging, while the region is increasingly drawing the attention of states and companies.

The panel examines these developments from different perspectives: from geopolitical dynamics and growing security significance to critical raw materials and resources, and on to new shipping routes and the strategic interests of the United States. What impact will new trade routes have on global trade and existing maritime chokepoints? And what role will the US and other major powers play in shaping the Arctic's future?

Robert Habeck is preparing an open lecture on geopolitics for HSG. He is compiling a selection of texts on the subject, which participants are asked to read in advance. In the lecture that follows, the texts will be discussed together, and key questions and different perspectives on each topic will be worked out.
