cinema@SQUARE invites you every October to watch films and join the discussion. This year’s edition focuses on the theme of war. War films have been popular for a long time, but today we view them differently than just a few years ago. Until Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, war films evoked a cozy thrill of the exotic. They depicted survival struggles in an archaic brutality that seemed overcome in the era of the peace dividend.

Today, however, war feels twice as close: both in space and time. Eastern Ukraine resembles the trench landscapes of World War I, and Western Europe is massively increasing its military readiness in response to the heightened risk of war. What can war films contribute to helping us navigate this new reality?

The series is curated by Casper Hirschi, professor at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He presents a selection of powerful films, which are followed by discussions with experts from various fields.
