A significant name in European politics returns to St. Gallen: The University of St.Gallen and SQUARE are pleased to welcome Othmar Karas. The former Vice-President of the European Parliament will participate in various public events during his stay at SQUARE and provide valuable insights into European politics. With his many years of political experience, he offers students and the public unique perspectives on the European Union's financial and economic policy, European integration, and the importance of transparency and democracy.
Othmar Karas is regarded as an outstanding and influential figure in European politics. With a strong academic background, including a PhD in Political Science from the University of Vienna and a Master’s degree in Business Law from the University of St.Gallen, he brings extensive expertise in legal and political matters. His political career took him from a role as an assistant in the Austrian National Council to that of First Vice-President of the European Parliament, an influential position which he held from January 2022 to July 2024. He has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1999 and, throughout his political career, has exerted considerable influence, particularly in the areas of EU foreign policy, social policy, and economic and monetary policy.
