Personality in Residence: Matthias Glaubrecht

September 21 to 23
Author, Evolutionary Biologist and Science Historian

Matthias Glaubrecht has spent many years researching biodiversity, evolution, and global species extinction, and is one of the best-known German-speaking voices in the debate on the loss of biological diversity. He became particularly well known for his work on human-caused species extinction and the question of how science can take on social responsibility.

In lectures, books, and public discussions, Matthias Glaubrecht connects natural science research with pressing societal questions. He advocates for a new understanding of the relationship between humans and nature, one that is critical and interdisciplinary.

The events are public and free. The detailed programme and registration links will follow.

Chief Nature Officer – Boardroom-Simulation

public course, 2:45 to 5:30 pm, SQUARE Residency Grid

Student teams take the role of a newly appointed Chief Nature / Biodiversity Officer: material risks, TNFD-aligned targets, a budget ask and a first-100-days plan, defended before a 'board'.

Research Clinic: Biodiversity Credits – what carbon markets teach us

public course, 9:30 bis 11:30 am, SQUARE Residency Grid

Small-group, research-based session on biodiversity credits as an emerging instrument: what carbon markets got right and wrong, integrity and measurement, who the buyers would be, and what a credible market design would require.

Paneldiscussion: From species loss to the balance sheet

3:30 to 5 pm, SQUARE Bühne 2.OG

Biodiversity was long treated as a natural-science topic. It now appears in risk reports, credit assessments and reporting standards, because companies depend on soils, water, pollination and stable ecosystems in ways that never showed up on a balance sheet.

This panel builds the bridge from biology to business: how can nature loss be measured at all? What do emerging frameworks such as the TNFD actually require of companies? Where are investors already moving capital – and where is it still mostly rhetoric? Researchers from evolutionary biology, strategy and finance discuss, followed by an open Q&A. Open to the whole university and to HSG alumni.

With Matthias Glaubrecht, Judith Walls and Martin Nerlinger. Discussion isheldinEnglish, Registration link to follow.

Keynote and fireside: Das Ende der Evolution?

6:30 to 8 pm, SQUARE Bühne 2. OG

We are living through the largest wave of extinction since the dinosaurs disappeared – and this time we are the cause. Evolutionary biologist Matthias Glaubrecht traces how the diversity of life took shape over millions of years, how quickly it is now being lost, and what is at stake if we continue to watch it happen. His account runs from field research to the harder question of what responsibility science, policy and business carry.

The lecture is followed by a moderated fireside conversation and audience questions: what species loss means concretely for Switzerland, for companies and for each of us – and where there is reason for hope. An apéro follows.

Keynote: Prof. Matthias Glaubrecht. Moderation: Prof. Martin Nerlinger. Registration Link to follow.

Human Library: one-to-one conversations with Matthias Glaubrecht

2.30 pm to 4.30 pm, SQUARE Residency Grid

As part of our Human Library, we welcome Matthias Glaubrecht as a ‘living book’. In one-to-one conversations, he will share insights into his experiences as an evolutionary biologist and biosystematician.

Discussions with individuals or groups of up to three people will last 20 minutes each.
