It is not enough to ask what algorithmic systems are doing to us; we must also consider what we are doing to them. How are we feeding such systems with our stories and affective orientations? The enthusiasm, fears, and frustrations that people express support a broader argument: feelings are form-giving social forces.

This emphasis on feeling is also relevant to current discussions on AI. ChatGPT is a convenient tool to get things done. Yet it is also widely shared that LLM use is harmful. These harms are thought to affect lives on various fronts, ranging from cognitive and social to economic and planetary. This points to the need to closely explore the design processes that shape how people feel about themselves and the wider world when interacting with AI chatbots.
