Artist in Residence: Patti Basler

Author, satirist, and comedian

Patti Basler brings the down-to-earth attitude of a farmer's daughter from the hayloft to the stage. Raised in the Catholic Fricktal region, she became a secondary school teacher, educator and author of teaching materials, and earned a degree in education, sociology and criminology from the University of Zurich.

She stumbled onto the slam stage late in life and immediately took home success by the whiskey bottle. She soon became one of the most established poets on the Swiss slam scene and has since appeared on all the well-known stages, television channels and radio stations nationwide.

She is the winner of the 2019 Salzburger Stier and the 2019 Prix Walo and was named ‘Columnist of the Year’ in 2022 for her writing in the NZZ am Sonntag. Together with her stage partner Philippe Kuhn, she received the 2024 Swiss Comedy Award for her current stage programme ‘LÜCKE’.

Workshops Creative Writing

Patti Basler writes, rhymes, slams, and brings sharp wordplay to the stage. Whether on radio, television, or in print, she captivates audiences and conversation partners alike. With remarkable speed, she captures and condenses current events, presenting them live on stage as perhaps Switzerland’s fastest chronicler of contemporary affairs. For her work, she received both the Salzburger Stier and the Prix Walo in 2019, and in 2022 she was honoured as “Columnist of the Year” for her writing in NZZ am Sonntag.

In three workshops, she shares her experience and introduces participants to the art of writing. The workshops are open to anyone who struggles to express their thoughts clearly, wants to improve their wording, or simply feels inspired to learn from an experienced writing professional.

The workshops will be held in German and do not build on one another. Each workshop is limited to 15 participants.

Poetry Slam

18:15 bis 20 Uhr, SQUARE Bühne, 2. OG

Under the sharp-witted and eloquent moderation of Patti Basler, the stage becomes a space for linguistic artistry, humour, and powerful texts. Poets compete against one another with their own original work – sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, sometimes serious, sometimes hilariously funny. In the end, the audience decides who wins.

Whether experienced slam poets or brave newcomers: anyone who would like to perform their own texts can sign up for the poetry slam and become part of this lively contest. Listening is just as worthwhile – an evening full of verbal acrobatics, surprises, and literary highlights is guaranteed.
