During the Second World War the Swiss government demanded that even remote mountain meadows be converted into farmland in order to boost food production, the so called «Plan Wahlen». Mountain farmer Kaspar Tanner refuses and insists on his self-determination.He continued to farm self-sufficiently, which brought him into conflict with the authorities and ultimately into prison.

Xavier Koller's film, released in the mid-1980s, is a political lesson about the tensions between individualism and the common good in times of exceptional social situations.FollowedbyadiscussionwithDr.RomanRossfeldfromtheUniversityofBern,anexpertonthecultivationbattlesoftheFirstandSecondWorldWars.
