Estonia Between the Fronts: One part of the country fights under the flag of the Red Army, the other under the rule of the SS. Brothers Karl and Jüri suddenly find themselves facing each other, swept up in the tide of history — forced to fight on opposing sides while defending the same homeland.
The brothers turned enemies embody the inner conflict of countless Estonians, trapped between great powers and rival ideologies. With 1944, director Elmo Nüganen delivers an intense yet understated portrait of war-torn Estonia. Followed by a discussion with Yves Partschefeld, expert on war experience and memory in Eastern Europe. Moderated by Caspar Hirschi.
