The PhD phase is a crucial and often intense period in the life of researchers. Every PhD student knows the ups and downs of narrowing down research questions, navigating datasets, learning new methods, presenting at conferences, feelings of success and feelings of despair. While every PhD journey is an individual one, research culture has an influence on how the PhD phase is experienced. “Research culture” is defined as “the behaviors, values, expectations, attitudes and norms of our re-search communities. It influences researchers’ career paths and determines the way that research is conducted and communicated” (The Royal Society).

All PhD students are kindly invited to have brunch with Prof em. Dame Sarah Springman, former Rector of ETH Zurich and Principal of the St. Hilda’s College at the University of Oxford to discuss how they experience research culture. Prof. Springman has vast experience with all aspects of doctoral studies. Make use of the opportunity to make your voice heard: what does research culture mean from the perspective of early career researchers? What are the challenges that PhD students face? What would need to change in their fields’ research culture? What do PhD students expect from their supervisor, the university and what can PhD students themselves contribute to healthy research environments?

This event is part of Prof. Dame Springman’s visit at SQUARE as Personality in Residence and co-organized with DocNet.
