Tauche gemeinsam mit AV Notkeriana in die Verangenheit ab! Die Universität St.Gallen feiert ihr 125-jähriges Bestehen. Der Akademische Verein Notkeriana stellt eine begehbare Ausstellung zusammen, die die Geschichte des studentischen Lebens von der griechischen Antike über die italienische Renaissance bis hin zum modernen Bologna-System zeigt. Die Besucher:innen haben die Möglichkeit, die Ausstellung zu erkunden und bei Lesungen unter der Leitung unseres sachkundigen Mitglieds Durin, auch bekannt als Märlidurin, eine Weile zu verweilen. Die Mitglieder der AV Notkeriana stehen während der Ausstellung auch für einen offenen Austausch und Fragen zur Verfügung.

Andrii Portnov, Professor of Entangled History of Ukraine at the European University Viadrina (Frankfurt/Oder), will present his book “Dnipro. An Entangled History of a European City”. This first English-language synthesis of the history of Dnipro (until 2016 Dnipropetrovsk, until 1926 Katerynoslav) locates the city in a broader regional, national, and transnational context and explores the interaction between global processes and everyday routines of urban life. The history of a place (throughout its history called new Athens', Ukrainian Manchester', the Brezhnev`s capital' and the heart of Ukraine') is seen through the prism of key threads in the modern history of Europe: the imperial colonization and industrialization, the war and the revolution in the borderlands, the everyday life and mythology of a Soviet closed city, and the transformations of post-Soviet

SQUARE is proud to showcase Elena Subach’s latest exhibition, “Chairs”, featuring a series of striking photographs and objects depicting the refugee situation at the beginning of the war at the Ukrainian-Slovakian boarder, where Ukrainian families where separated for an indefinite time. The exhibition explores the theme of love, perseverance and hope in the face of adversity.
Following the vernissage, Elena will be joined by Lisa Yasko, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament and our Personality in Residence, for a thought-provoking discussion on the meaning behind the "Chairs" project. Together, they will explore how the Ukrainian people are responding to the ongoing conflict in their country, and how hope, love, and resilience continue to shine through despite the challenges.
To close the evening, Lisa Yasko will treat us to a special musical and poetic performance titled "Yellow-blue Night," showcasing the richness and diversity of Ukrainian culture through song, dance, and spoken word.

Robots are increasingly part of everyday life and work. They help serve food, man hotels, make hiring decisions, and even give sermons. But findings from brand new research suggest that human's feelings about robots remain complicated: while we tend to enjoy being served by robots, we dislike working with them and for them. Then, using historical and cross-cultural data from millions of individuals, a natural experiment in a recently automated Buddhist temple in Japan, and a fully randomized experiment in a Taoist temple in Singapore, we will explore the new frontier of human-robot interaction: how we interact with machines as a believer.

Diese Methoden zielen darauf ab, Aufmerksamkeit durch reisserische oder übertriebene Überschriften zu erlangen, um so mehr Klicks und damit höhere Werbeeinnahmen zu generieren. Doch in den letzten zwei Jahren haben Gerichte in Deutschland und der Schweiz solche Clickbait-Praktiken verurteilt, insbesondere wenn diese Persönlichkeitsrechte verletzten. Diese jüngsten Entscheidungen haben Auswirkungen auf die Art und Weise, wie Medienunternehmen Inhalte künftig erstellen und verbreiten: Wird es ein Rückbesinnung auf qualitativ hochwertigen Journalismus geben? Kann sich die Medienbranche in Zeiten von Social Media von diesen kurzfristigen monetären Anreizen lösen und zu ihrer Funktion als Vierte Gewalt zurückkehren? Wie kann, unter Berücksichtigung der Digitalisierung, der Berechnungsmechanismus bei der Gewinnabschöpfung konkretisiert werden?
Hansi Voigt, ehemaliger Chefredakteur von 20min.ch und Gründer des Online-Newsportals watson.ch erklärt wie es zu dieser digitalen Ausbeutungstendenz der Boulevard-Medien kam und welche Rolle dabei die digitale Wertschöpfung und der veränderte Medienkonsum spielt. Anschliessend wird mit Jolanda Spiess-Hegglin von #NetzCourage, deren Fall für ein Präzedenzfall im Medienrecht gesorgt hat, ihrer Medienanwältin Dr. Rena Zulauf und Vertreter:innen aus der Medienbranche (tba) diskutiert.

End-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging is one of the eldest problems in communication security - at least as far as the Internet is concerned. The first solutions for asynchronous messaging in terms of electronic mail date back to the 1990s (e.g., PGP and S/MIME), whereas the first solutions for synchronous or instant messaging appeared in the 2000s (e.g., OTR). Generalizing these techniques and applying them to the centralized architecture of today's Internet messaging services led to the development of the Signal protocol that is omnipresent and marks state-of-the-art in the field. Most interestingly, its double ratchet mechanism provides what is known as forward secrecy and post-compromise security. In addition to Signal, the protocol is also used in many other widely deployed messengers, including Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Wire. In its basic form, it targets the two-party setting and does not provide an obvious solution for group communications.
Such a solution is currently being developed within the IETF Messaging Layer Security (MLS) Working Group. The goal is to design a Signal-like protocol that meets the security and scalability requirements of potentially very large groups.

From its inception, the Web was quickly perceived as a vast source of knowledge for people all over the world and it took some time to understand that its potential goes far beyond. Not only did it become the most popular architecture for developing Internet applications it also became a place for all sorts of programs to interact and exchange knowledge.
This is also confirmed by the latest evolutions of AI that produce and consume a lot of information and data on the Web. In fact, using examples from several projects, we will see that the Web is now providing universal hypermedia linking all forms of intelligence and knowledge, and supporting their evolutions on public and private networks.
For this reason, we will show that the Web and its extensions must be designed to be human-centered to enable the futures we want and to avoid the futures we fear.
On July 18th-19th, 2023, SQUARE will host the Final of the First University of St. Gallen Grand Challenge, focusing on assessing cutting-edge A.I. technology in light of the upcoming EU A.I. Act. Six teams of professionals will compete for a prize of 100,000 CHF, awarded by a jury. The EU A.I. Act categorizes A.I. according to risk, and the Grand Challenge will reveal how this new legislation can be implemented on specific technology. The public can attend to witness the competition, and some A.I. technology will be on display. Participation is open, and potential teams should register for an online informational event on March 2, 2023.
